About St. George's
Message from William W. Taylor, School President
Welcome
to the website for St. George's Independent School, a coeducational
school with campuses in Memphis, Germantown, and Collierville,
Tennessee. We hope that browsing our site will give you a glimpse of
what makes a St. George's education truly unique.
Founded in
1959 by parishioners of St. George's Episcopal Church, we began as a
small, coeducational, independent day school. In the mid-1990's we
embarked on a capital campaign to open two new, separately incorporated
schools–a new middle/upper school in Collierville and a second
elementary school in Memphis. Today all three campuses share the same
mission of being schools of excellence that prepare students for a life
of learning and meaningful contribution through dedication to high
academic achievement and the development of moral character reinforced
by Judeo-Christian values.
Relationships are a key component
of the St. George's experience. The coeducational environment helps the
development of positive relationships with the opposite gender.
Mentoring relationships between teachers and students, partnerships
between home and school, and connections among all three campuses are
evident. Our school is characterized by a personalized approach to
education and by faculty members who see their jobs as a form of
ministry.
Our philosophy is student-centered. Rigorous academics
are balanced by the recognition that students may excel and learn in
many areas, whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the art
studio, or on the stage. "Balance" is a word used frequently at St.
George's because it recalls for us the need to nurture students' bodies
and souls, as well as their minds.
Our student body reflects
many different religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Regular
chapel services, religion classes, community service projects, and
character education give students opportunities to grow spiritually and
reinforce the dignity of every human being. At St. George's we operate
on the belief that everyone is a child of God. As such, we believe that
each student has God-given gifts and talents that are waiting to be
discovered, refined, and shared.
A website is one way to
experience a school, but it only gives a small taste of the true
character of our campuses. We invite you to visit us in person to gain
a better feel for St. George's Independent School. One alumna stated
once, "St. George's becomes a way of life." We believe you'll see what
this means by visiting any one of our campuses. Come see how good a
school can be!
Sincerely,
William W. Taylor
School President
