About St. George's

Our Mascot

The original mascot of the school was the Dragon, in keeping with the ancient legend of Saint George. When the school expanded to open the Collierville campus, a new mascot – the Gryphon – was adopted for that campus due to Collierville High School’s existing dragon mascot. For a time, the Dragon remained the mascot for the lower school; in 2012, after consultation with various stakeholder groups, it was announced that the Gryphon would become the mascot for St. George's Independent School.

What is a Gryphon?

A gryphon is a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle.  Gryphons have been represented in art and literature since ancient times.  A gryphon symbolizes the combination of intelligence and strength. The gryphon was chosen because it represents the holistic education for which St. George's is known.
